What are some strategies or activities you would use so as to be a better teacher in the classroom? Recommend websites, books, material or games you would use or have used and indicate the age and level of the students. Waiting for your posts!!! Best regards from your teacher, Marcela.
you can do some activities, for examples: plays, when you want to teach a vocabulary (first grade: vocabulary of colors, the students can paint a draw whith the colors yuo want to teach).
ReplyDeleteNicole Lange Miranda.
Can you be more specific, Nicole? your answer is kind of vague. Be concrete and describe an activity and its material. Regards, Marcela.
ReplyDeleteWell it's very difficult to choose an activity because there are many things that we need to consider. (4th grade) I would do an interactive activity, but first of all I need to know what my students like. I don't know any website so I am going to use just my creative side :) .... For children I would use games or songs to teach vocabulary, maybe a song about animals, colors or numbers. Of course I need a radio to sing the song and papers with the song.

Personally, I think that it`s important to consider the level and the age of our students, so we are going to "pretend" that we know that our class is prepared for children.(between 5 and 8 years old)
ReplyDeleteChildren are very concrete, they enjoy very much role plays, songs, drowing and make activities with their own hands.
I know a very good website where you can find a lot of exercises, handouts and material to show your students.
www.mes-english.com
It`s a very good idea to start the class singing a song, that should be related with the topic or the unit that you want to teach.
Then you can make your students to print or cut using the exersices of this website.
Finally you can make a game that you can also find in the same place.
See you on monday!

ReplyDeleteContent: Tongue Twister
ReplyDeleteClass : 7th grade
General objective: Teach vocabulary and pronunciation, using words that appear in a Tongue Twister.
Time : 20 minutes
Warm up: Teacher asks sts if they know any tongue twister, for example "Pablito clavó un clavito" (4 minutes)
Presentation: Teacher presents to their sts, a tongue twister, and underline the keywords(words that repeated constantly).
Teacher asks to sts, if they know the meaning of these words, if they don't, teacher gives them the meaning.(6 minutes)
Practice: Teacher teaches the tongue twister and they have to repeat it.(3 minutes)
Production: Teacher picks at random 5 sts, to read for themselves the tongue twister. (7 minutes)
Books: Ten-Second Tongue Twisters by Mike Artell and Buck Jones.
Tongue Twisters (Little Giant Books) by Joseph Rosenbloom and Mike.
I would use this activity with my students, it´s related to learn prepositions, it´s for beginner level, from 9 to 11 years. Children can develop linguistic, auditory, visual, kinaethetic and rhythmic intelligence.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I show my students a brief list of prepositions and pictures relate to them in order to they make association between pictures and prepositions, then I write and read simple senteces about them, ask children to repeat aloud sentences after me. After that, I teach them a short song relates to prepositions, where students have to sing, stand up and imitate a mime, which I do first. Finally, I ask them to follow my orders and do the action, for example, "My pencil is on my head" and children have to put their pencils on their heads. The time for this activitiy is about 45 minutes or in 2 classes, depend on the language level of students.
JIMENA SAA.
First, I think that we should to design every lesson or activity plans according to the levels and ages of our students.
ReplyDeleteSome websites that can be used are: http://www.saberingles.com.ar/writing/index.html (all types of levels)
http://www.guiainfantil.com/966/cuentos-en-ingles-the-snowman.html (for children)
http://www.dominios.net/musicenglish/html/profeso1.html# (mainly for beginners)

Now, I`m going to explain an activity that you can use:
DESCRIPTION OF SELF
Activity: Students make cards that describes themselves.
Objectives: Language associated with description of self
Skills:Using descriptive terms
Grouping:Individual leading to group
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Note cards
Language: See language below
Preparation:Have the students take out a pencil and note card or piece of paper
Presentation: Using pointed questions, ask students to describe themselves. Example: "What is your hair like?" As you do this, familiarize them with the language (i.e., curly, long, straight, etc.). Continue with other characteristics, which they write on their cards. Add language and/ or categories that are not on the lists provided. When they have finished, collect the cards and read a few. As you read them, ask studentsto guess which student you are talking about.
Extension activities: Have students write any unfamiliar language associated with the activity in their notebooks.
Testing: Ask the students to describe two or three students in class (or use some pictures of people) using the target language.

I believe that the best way to plan a class is to know about students hobbies. Then, It should be easier to do something interesting for them.
ReplyDeletee.g: If you have a group of seniors, and you notice they participate better in speaking activities than writing, and also they are STRONGLY convinced about their decisions and feelings you can divide that group in three.
One in favour. One against, and those who think neutrally.
You must be the secretary (Use the board to write important ideas), who controls the activity, and who finishes and conclude the same.
The idea of this activity is to open the senior's outlook, to help them to become more tolerant.
A useful activity to demonstrate that:
1. English can be useful, even for the people who don't like.
2. You can help to solve students' troubles in a direct and indirect manner, and you can change the environment of the class.
Our work is not only about our subject. The important fact is to help students.

ReplyDeletedon`t you think that is a wide open question?
ReplyDeleteI mean, i thought that we were supposed to post our oppinion about some articles or something like that...
anyway...here I go:
all of us know that eventhough we have this kind of energy and a big bag in our back with a lot of ideas, we have to fit in the school model and curriculum, so maybe its better to contemplate the panorama and then act.
my kind of teaching it is based first of all in a diagnose of the things that students know or have doubts about anything.
then I could make a mixture of the model that the school tries to apply and some "improvisation" related to activities (I really mean activities, like doing something funny and not that kind of boring activities) you know children don't want some one giving orders and putting rules on them, so give them some kind of control in the class (obviously I dont want kids hangin' from the walls or jumpin' on the tables), allow them to have fun with the language :D
and thats it...and I guess that this is not about who have the right way to teach, is about if you have something in your mind hahaha LOL

well, hi everyone:
ReplyDeleteI think a fantactic activity for learning colors as well as clothes vocabulary is performing a model parade, I have seen it and for sure worked, but the grade was in a 6th one. how to do it?: requesting to the student to come with street and very colored wearing, and themseselves will become in famous models. eventhough you may play characterizing them in famous people.
best regards. CaCo.
Well, nowadays we are quite fortunate, everyone knows that, because we are in middle of this 'Cybernetic Era', in which we could find a lot of teaching materials, as a couple of classmates have told here. However, we could not forget those resources used by our grandparents, for example, or our parents too. I am talking to 'the books', and here I have a good one; 'The Recipe Book' by Longman Books and edited by Seth Lindstromberg, in which you could discover many activities to different ages and language level learners. Now, I am going to summarize you one of those activities;
ReplyDelete'Label The Room'
Level: beginner to intermediate
Time: 10 - 15 minutes
Lg.Focus: concrete nouns
Skills: all four
The students have to cut some note papers into label-sized pieces. They are going to have 5 minutes to go around the room naming all the objects in it. But, they are going to stick labels on things that they know the names only, and also they should write their own names on these labels. When the teacher says Go!, the students begin to stick their labels with Scotch tape, for example, all over the room. After 5 or 10 minutes, the teacher shouts Stop!. Finally, the teacher goes around checking the correctness of the labels. Those who have misspelt something get their labels back, to solve the mistakes then. The student who has written the most correct labels wins.
Hello to all of you:
ReplyDeleteOn my case I would work with students of 3th upper grade(16 and 17 years old) in a speaking activity, taken from this webpage: http://www.englishlearner.com/teachers/speaking.html
The activity that I will choose is called where shall we go on holidays
First I would start with an introduction of the theme talking about my familiar discussions about holidays(5 minutes), then I will explain the activity and show them the way they have to do it, and give them the instructions (10 inutes)
The preparation of the activity will take a time of 20 minutes.
After that we will select the order of the presentations of the groups, to perform them from the next class.
The idea of evaluation is the performance of each group in front of the class following a rubric that will consider these topics:
_Grammar
_Pronunciation
_Fluency
_Cohesion of the group
_Preparation
Obviously the requirements will be according to the level of the students.
Best Regards.

I agree that it´s important to consider the level and the age of our students, one of the strategies that I like for many reasons is Using music in the classroom, I think it is a great way for teachers to achieve success with L2 learners.
ReplyDeleteSome benefits of using Music:
-improves concentration
-improves memory
-motivates learning
-relaxes people who are overwhelmed or stressed
-makes learning fun
Techniques for Using Music with L2 Learners:
-introduce a new theme or topic (Christmas / colours/feelings)
-change the mood
-teach vocabulary
-review material (background music improves memory)
-teach pronunciation and intonation
There are many books to teach english as you know, I recommend Inside Out and Attitude.
Website www.sitesforteachers.com Here you can find a lot of websites related to activities.

Hello everyone.
ReplyDeleteWell I like to work with children so I would do lots of interactive activities, for example I would do this:
Video Lesson guide.
In the video children are going to learn English vocabulary related to animals. Names and more.
Children have to listen and repeat what they hear when it corresponds and follow the videos closely. Of course I would repeat the video for clarity.
Children must keep a dictionary nearby in case they still can’t understand some information.
After the video I would check if they really understood the lesson.
Then I would ask for example:
What is the name of this animal?
What does this animal eat?
Does this animal fly?
And as we know children have a limited attention span, so next class I would do a worksheet related to the topic.
I recommend you this websites.

Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteWell, first of all I have to say: What a hard work we as teachers have!!! I would like that people were more considered with us for what we do.
Now, regarding the question in my case I prefer work with teenagers, I know is a difficult stage that one, I really know but I feel comfortable working with them. And I think sometimes there is a misunderstanding regarding what activities we should use with them, and we left behind all those creative, colourful and proactive things because we tend to believe that those are more suitable for children but I have seen that with teanagers those things work perfectly! They really show interest and they feel important, they feel that the teacher they have in front really cares for them. I said that I have seen it because my guide teacher in where I'm doing my practise, cares a lot for her students and she is always thinking about interesting things to carry out with them. Las year she used a web page in wich students have the freedom to create things like newspapers, posters, articles, etc.. I think is a very good tool for us to teach in a succesfully way.
This page is the following:
http://www.4teachers.org/
Here you can find different tools you can use like this one, that is the one my guide teacher uses with her students:

Regards!!!
I think that it is important to plan the lesson according to the studentes and the context....In this website we can find a lot of activities for different kinds of students.

KARLA
There are many resources to use in the classroom: flashcards, radio, video, ppt, computing laboratory (if the school has one), even oral activities such as dialogues or performances. All these things can be used at any level, for example flashcards are a good resource for kindergarten, flashcards should be interesting in order to get the attention of the young learners; or oral activities like dialogues or tonguetwisters for teenagers to improve spoken english.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good webpage but I think that someone else recommended it:
http://www.mes-english.com/
That's all my dear classmates and teacher! xD
Best regards!
first of all be warm and try to get know to your students , learn every name of the children , cause children love when you call them up by their names , there is nothing better like a weel- prepared lesson , it shows your interest for your students . i dont but for me one of the most important skill is speaking , so i'd try to give more emphasis to spoken language . that's what' zup

ReplyDeletei forgot the website , here it is
I would like to be a teacher who interact with their students, and also...trying to use all the time dinamics materials such as music, Power Points, videos, etc. One of the main things that i dislike is the idea of "do what the book said".....LOL, this is like a football field, you MUST improvise and be like a Wizzard, create and create new methods according the profile of your students.
